Northeast of Bruges you will find Damme. This small charming town – once a fisherman’s village build on the dam to protect Bruges in the 12th century – used to be the dynamic port of Bruges from which loads of products where imported (wine from Bordeaux, herring from Sweden,…) . Due to the silting up of the area, the city lost this activity;
Damme anno 21ste century is mostly know as a famous Book town with several small picturesque bookshops to wander around. Every second Sunday of the month, there is also a book market on the Market Square in front of the beautiful town hall;
Damme also is also known for its nice restaurants serving local flavours. Some of my favourites; the lively bistro Eetcafé De Smisse,the culinary hidden secret De Zuidkant (one Michelin Star), tea & lunchroom Tante Marie, the Italian great for kids Il Sorriso della nonna and the classic of all classic Restaurant De Siphon that has been serving local dishes to young and old for over 4 generations! And don’t forget to stop for a homemade ice cream at De Ijshoeve!
Since a few years some small microbreweries have popped up in Damme; producing delicious local beers made from home grown crop. Brouwerij Viven, Brouwerij Bruggja and Siphon Brewing that recently won the price for Best new Brewery in Belgium!
The Bruges Countryside Cycling Network is comprised of over 930 kilometres of enjoyable cycling through woods and polders, past castles and along canals, and through picturesque towns and villages such as Oostkerke, Hoeke, Lapscheure
The idyllic Damse Vaart with its crooked poplars is one of the most beautiful path and leads you all the way from Brugse Dampoort via Damme to the city of Sluis in Holland. All information on these walking or cycling paths can be found in the centre of tourism in Damme Visit Damme;
If you prefer to take up the pace a bit, you can also explore the area on a Vespa scooter. Contact Vesparoute. Bicycles can be rented in the centre of Damme. For guests of our holiday cottage Pijpeweg71 it is also possible to have bikes delivered to the house upon request.
